As I mention in the interview with Dan, the reason why the sleeve gastrectomy is so effective is that it changes the gastro intestinal hormones in the body. What we’ve discovered over time is that when a person loses a significant amount of weight those gastro intestinal hormones are working really hard to drive that person back to the weight they were.
To back these findings up even more, a recent study of former “The Biggest Loser” contestants showed that even though the contestants had lost an enormous amount of weight, their metabolism did not change. In fact, these contestant’s metabolism became even slower, and the pounds began piling back on.
It was as if their bodies were intensifying their effort to pull the contestants back to their original weight.
You can read about the study here .
With the sleeve gastrectomy, when we cut out part of the stomach, and leave that upper two-thirds in a tube shape, it changes those gastro intestinal hormones giving that person a new set point. That gives people a very powerful tool to help them change their eating habits.
People really do need a tool when it comes to losing weight.
As I mention in the interview, surgery is only a tool to help a person change their eating habits long term. And it becomes easier to change your eating habits and lose weight long term when you don’t have those gastro intestinal hormones working against you!
